Web2 or Web3?

Sometime in January, I decided to go in-depth into the web3 technology and coincidentally, Zuri (https://zuri.team) which is a company that trains (aspiring/established) web and software developers in new technologies sent me a mail, informing of its partnership with a crypto giant Nestcoin (https://nestcoin.com) for a scheduled training of such. With both projects aligning, I signified my interest by registering on https://block games.gg. Few days into my studies with the program, i have discovered some interesting variations between both technologies.

Web2 introduced a never seen before internet interactivity. Not only did we get information from pages, the pages got information from us. As a result of this, centralized companies received data from us, so they could serve us better content. Over time these companies realized they could share these data to third-parties with or without our consent and also, they possessed the power to censor our interactions on platforms. Hence, we could say web2 control is centralized and we could refer to this period as the age of targeted advertising and lack of user privacy.

On the other hand, Web3, Also called a decentralized application (DAPP) is an application built on the blockchain, with which users can retain much value as there is no intermediary. Unlike web2 which is centralized and under the control of the service providers, Web3 is open to everybody, being censorship resistant. Furthermore, It’s composible meaning applications can be built on other applications and It is safer as there is no central point of failure.

To conclude, we can view web3 technology as bits and pieces of ideas from a big concept by different bodies not built by one so nobody owns it. It may not takeover from existing structures immediately but the transition would be gradual and for specific applications. It would be an exciting journey.
